Spray tanning has come a long way over the years. Modern tanning solutions are designed to develop evenly, fade naturally and create beautifully realistic results that complement your skin tone rather than looking orange or streaky.
With the correct preparation and aftercare, your spray tan can last up to 10 days, making it the perfect choice before holidays, weddings, special occasions or simply when you want to feel your best.

Professional spray tanning solutions contain an active ingredient called DHA (Dihydroxyacetone). DHA is a colourless sugar derived from natural sources that reacts with the amino acids found in the outermost layer of your skin.
This natural reaction creates the appearance of a tan without affecting the deeper layers of your skin or exposing you to UV damage. Because the colour develops within the skin’s surface cells, your tan naturally fades as your skin renews itself over the following week.
Everyone’s skin is unique, which is why your final colour may vary slightly from someone else’s. Factors such as your natural skin tone, skin hydration and even hormone levels can influence your final result.
Understanding spray tan undertones
Professional tanning solutions aren’t simply “light” or “dark.” They also contain different colour undertones that work with your natural complexion to create the most flattering finish.
Warm undertones create a golden glow, while cooler undertones help achieve a deeper bronze finish. Choosing the correct undertone allows your tan to look natural and balanced rather than appearing orange or unnatural.
Your therapist will recommend the most suitable solution based on your skin tone and the look you’d like to achieve.
What is a two-phase developing tanning solution?
Both of our spray tanning brands use a modern two-phase developing system.
The colour you see immediately after your appointment is known as the cosmetic bronzer. This allows your therapist to achieve an even application and gives you an instant glow.
After your first shower, the cosmetic bronzer rinses away while the DHA continues developing beneath the skin’s surface. Your true tan will continue to deepen over the next 24 hours before reaching its final colour.

Spray Tanning FAQ
Preparation is one of the biggest factors in achieving an even, long-lasting tan.
For the best results, we recommend:
- Complete all hair removal (waxing, sugaring or shaving) at least the day before your appointment. Freshly treated hair follicles and skin can affect how the tanning solution develops.
- Exfoliate your body thoroughly to remove dead skin cells. Fresh, smooth skin allows your tan to develop more evenly and fade naturally.
- Avoid applying body creams, oils, deodorant or antiperspirant on the day of your appointment, as these can create a barrier or interfere with the tanning solution.
- Wear loose-fitting, dark clothing after your appointment to prevent rubbing and allow the tan to develop evenly.
If you’d like the very best results, ask our team about booking a full body exfoliation before your spray tan.

Keeping your skin healthy and hydrated plays a huge role in extending the life of your tan. Dry skin sheds more quickly, causing your tan to fade faster and less evenly.
One of Jade and Terri’s favourite recommendations is combining Environ Derma-Lac Lotion with Environ Vitamin A, C & E Body Oil. This powerful combination helps keep the skin hydrated, improves overall skin health and allows your tan to fade more gradually and evenly.
Swimming regularly in chlorinated pools or the ocean may also shorten the lifespan of your tan.
Many of our clients continue to enjoy spray tanning throughout pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
One thing to be aware of is that hormonal changes can influence how your skin reacts to the tanning solution. Some clients notice their tan develops slightly lighter or differently than usual during pregnancy.
If you’re breastfeeding, we generally recommend choosing our Norvell Rapid spray tan, allowing you to shower sooner and remove any cosmetic bronzer from the surface of the skin. We also recommend avoiding application directly over the nipple area as an added precaution.
If you have any concerns, our therapists will happily discuss the most suitable option for you before your appointment.
For most special events, we love the two-day rule.
If your party or event is on Friday, for example, we’d generally suggest tanning on Wednesday.
DHA colour continues developing after your initial rinse, so the final result develops through to around the 24-hour point. Giving yourself that extra time means your tan can properly develop and settle before the big event.
If it’s for something particularly important – hello, wedding! – we’d also recommend having a trial tan well in advance so you already know which solution and result you love.
This is a difficult one because we genuinely love both – otherwise we wouldn’t offer both!
Rather than saying one is universally “better”, we’ll look at your natural skin tone, the finished look you’d like, your schedule and how quickly you need to rinse.
Norvell Rapid, for example, gives us flexibility around rinse times, with its professional rapid solutions designed to create different levels of colour depending on the recommended rinse time while continuing to develop afterwards.
For very fair clients wanting an especially subtle, natural-looking result, we may lean towards Tan Lab – but we’d rather see your skin and hear what you’re hoping to achieve before deciding.
And for your wedding? Have a trial. That’s definitely not the occasion to discover your spray-tan preference the day before!
